Knowra Khalid ibn al-Walid Khalid ibn al-Walid Khalid ibn al-Walid was a seventh-century Arab Muslim commander who led campaigns during the early Islamic conquests. Known as the Sword of God, he served under Muhammad and the first caliphs.
Battle of Mu'tah : A 629 battle between Muslim forces and Byzantine-aligned Ghassanid forces near Mu'tah in present-day Jordan. Khalid took command after the deaths of three Muslim commanders and led the army's withdrawal.
Mobile warfare : A military approach that relies on speed and maneuver to strike, evade, or outflank an opponent. Khalid's rapid movements across Arabia, Iraq, and Syria became central to his military reputation.
Muhammad : The seventh-century Arabian religious and political leader regarded by Muslims as the final prophet of Islam. Khalid entered Muhammad's service after converting to Islam and received the title Sword of God.
Banu Makhzum : A powerful clan of the Quraysh tribe in pre-Islamic and early Islamic Mecca. Khalid belonged to this clan, which had opposed Muhammad's movement before his conversion.
Battle of Firaz : A 634 battle near the borders of the Byzantine, Sasanian, and Arab territories, won by Khalid's forces. This victory marked the farthest westward point of Khalid's Iraqi campaign before his march to Syria.
Battle of Yarmouk : A 636 battle in which the Rashidun army defeated Byzantine forces near the Yarmouk River. Khalid's leadership in this decisive victory helped end Byzantine rule in much of Syria.
Cavalry : Military forces mounted on horses or other riding animals, used for mobility, shock, and reconnaissance. Mounted troops enabled the swift marches and battlefield maneuvers associated with Khalid's campaigns.
Abu Bakr : The first caliph, who led the Muslim community from 632 to 634 after Muhammad's death. Abu Bakr entrusted Khalid with major campaigns during the Ridda wars and the invasion of Iraq.
Quraysh : The Arab tribe that dominated Mecca and controlled the sanctuary of the Kaaba before Islam. Khalid's Meccan background placed him within the political group that first resisted Muhammad.
Siege of Damascus (634–635) : The Rashidun siege that captured Damascus from the Byzantine Empire in 634 or 635. Khalid played a prominent role in the city's capture during the Syrian campaign.
