Khorasan

Khorasan is a historical region of northeastern Iran and neighboring lands, whose boundaries shifted across successive Iranian and Central Asian states.

Greater Khorasan: A broad historical region encompassing parts of present-day Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. This expansive usage shows how Khorasan extended beyond the borders of modern Iran.
Tahirid dynasty: A ninth-century Iranian dynasty that governed Khorasan under nominal Abbasid authority. The Tahirids established one of the first locally rooted Muslim dynasties in Khorasan.
Ferdowsi: A Persian poet who composed the Shahnameh, an epic completed around the year 1010. Ferdowsi was born near Tus in Khorasan and made Persian epic tradition central to his work.
Iranian plateau: A highland region of southwestern Asia centered on Iran and extending into neighboring countries. Khorasan occupied the plateau’s northeastern edge and connected it to Central Asia.
Khorasan Province: A former administrative province in northeastern Iran, divided into three provinces in 2004. Its modern administrative boundaries were far narrower than historical Khorasan’s.
Samanid Empire: A Persianate dynasty that ruled parts of Central Asia and northeastern Iran from the ninth to tenth centuries. Its political and cultural center at Bukhara connected Khorasan with Transoxiana.
Omar Khayyam: A Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet who lived from 1048 to 1131. Khayyam worked and taught in Khorasan, including at Nishapur and Merv.
Transoxiana: The historical region between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers in Central Asia. Khorasan and Transoxiana were neighboring regions frequently joined under the same rulers.
Sasanian Empire: A Persian empire that ruled Iran and neighboring regions from 224 to 651 CE. The name Khorasan became established as a major eastern province under Sasanian rule.
Seljuk Empire: An empire founded by a Turkic dynasty that ruled much of western Asia during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Seljuks rose to power in Khorasan before expanding westward.
