Kii Channel

The Kii Channel is a sea passage in Japan between the Kii Peninsula on Honshu and Shikoku, with Awaji Island at its northern entrance. It connects the Seto Inland Sea with the Pacific Ocean.

Kii Peninsula: A peninsula in central Japan extending south from Honshu into the Pacific Ocean. Its eastern shore forms the channel’s western boundary.
Tomogashima: A small group of islands at the northern entrance of the Kii Channel, off Wakayama Prefecture. Its islands mark the passage near the channel’s northern mouth.
Nankai Ferry: A passenger and vehicle ferry service linking Wakayama Port with Tokushima Port. Its route is a direct crossing of the Kii Channel.
Kitan Strait: A strait between Awaji Island and Honshu linking the Kii Channel with Osaka Bay. It forms a northern route from the channel toward Osaka Bay.
Shikoku: The smallest of Japan’s four main islands, south of Honshu. Its northeastern coast bounds the channel to the east.
Wakayama Port: A commercial port on the coast of Wakayama Prefecture, facing the Kii Channel. The port gives the channel a major maritime gateway on Honshu.
Kii Channel Earthquake: A historical earthquake occurring in or near the Kii Channel region. The channel’s tectonic setting makes regional earthquake history relevant.
Osaka Bay: A bay in western Japan enclosed by Honshu, Shikoku, and Awaji Island. It lies beyond Kitan Strait at the channel’s northern end.
Awaji Island: An island in the Seto Inland Sea between Honshu and Shikoku. It lies at the channel’s northern entrance.
Tokushima Port: A port on the northeastern coast of Shikoku, facing the Kii Channel. Its ferry and shipping connections cross the channel toward Honshu.
