Kingdom of Aksum

The Kingdom of Aksum was an ancient East African state centered in present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. From roughly the first to seventh centuries CE, it linked the Red Sea trade network with the African interior.

Red Sea trade: A maritime commerce network connecting northeast Africa, Arabia, and the Mediterranean through the Red Sea. Aksum’s ports and inland routes connected African goods to Arabian and Mediterranean markets.
Pre-Aksumite period: The cultural and political period in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea before the rise of Aksum. Its settlements and traditions provide the immediate background to Aksumite state formation.
Ezana of Aksum: A fourth-century king of Aksum whose inscriptions record military campaigns and adoption of Christianity. Ezana’s reign marks Aksum’s conversion to Christianity and its peak of regional influence.

Adulis: An ancient port on the Red Sea coast of present-day Eritrea. Adulis served as Aksum’s principal maritime outlet for international commerce.
Yeha: An ancient settlement in northern Ethiopia with monumental architecture and inscriptions dating to the first millennium BCE. Yeha shows the region’s complex societies before Aksum became dominant.
Kaleb of Axum: A sixth-century king of Aksum who intervened militarily in Himyar, in southern Arabia. His campaign shows Aksum projecting royal power across the Red Sea.
Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church: An Oriental Orthodox Christian church based in Eritrea and sharing the Tewahedo tradition. The kingdom’s Christian heritage spans territories now divided between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Islamic expansion: The spread of Muslim rule and communities across the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond from the seventh century onward. Changing power around the Red Sea coincided with Aksum’s shrinking access to long-distance trade.
