Kingdom of England

A kingdom in the British Isles that existed from the tenth century until 1707, when its union with Scotland formed the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Anglo-Saxon England: The period and collection of kingdoms in England from the fifth century until the Norman Conquest in 1066. Its competing kingdoms were gradually consolidated into the Kingdom of England.
English monarchy: The institution of hereditary kingship that governed England and later formed part of the British monarchy. The kingdom's political structure centered on a monarch whose powers changed over time.
William the Conqueror: Duke of Normandy who conquered England in 1066 and ruled as its king until 1087. His conquest replaced the ruling elite and strengthened centralized royal control.
English Civil War: A series of armed conflicts from 1642 to 1651 between Royalists and Parliamentarians over government and authority. It brought the monarchy's temporary overthrow and exposed deep constitutional divisions.

Henry II of England: King of England from 1154 to 1189 and founder of the Angevin dynasty's English rule. His legal reforms and extensive continental holdings expanded the crown's reach.
Commonwealth of England: The republican government that ruled England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1649 to 1660. It replaced the kingdom after Charles I's execution and ended with the Restoration.
Principality of Wales: A medieval Welsh polity that came under English control and was formally incorporated into England by sixteenth-century laws. Its distinct legal and political history contrasts with England's status as a kingdom.
