Korean liberation

Korean liberation was the end of Japanese colonial rule on 15 August 1945, following Japan’s surrender in World War II. It began a transition marked by Allied occupation and the division of Korea.

Japanese rule in Korea: Japan’s colonial administration of Korea from 1910 until its surrender in 1945. Colonial rule was the system that ended with liberation.
Division of Korea: The separation of Korea into northern and southern political zones, which became two states in 1948. The occupation boundary established after liberation hardened into a national division.

United States Army Military Government in Korea: The United States military administration of southern Korea from 1945 to 1948. The United States governed the south during the post-liberation transition.
