Kosovo

Kosovo is a partially recognized state in southeastern Europe that declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Its status remains disputed by Serbia and some other states.

Kosovo War: An armed conflict in 1998–1999 between Yugoslav forces and Kosovo Albanian forces, followed by NATO intervention. The war precipitated Serbian withdrawal and international administration of Kosovo.
Constitution of Kosovo: The supreme legal document establishing Kosovo’s institutions, rights, and constitutional order. It defines the powers and structure of Kosovo’s self-governing institutions.
Ibrahim Rugova: A Kosovo Albanian political leader who advocated nonviolent resistance to Serbian rule during the 1990s. His strategy shaped Kosovo Albanian politics before the Kosovo War.

Breakup of Yugoslavia: The disintegration of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia into independent states during the 1990s. Kosovo’s status dispute unfolded amid the federation’s dissolution and its aftermath.
Assembly of Kosovo: The unicameral legislature of the Republic of Kosovo. The Assembly legislates and represents Kosovo’s citizens within the state’s constitutional system.
Hashim Thaçi: A Kosovo Albanian political leader who became a prominent figure in the Kosovo Liberation Army and later Kosovo’s government. He led Kosovo’s delegation during the 2008 declaration period and served as its prime minister.
International Court of Justice: The principal judicial organ of the United Nations, which settles legal disputes between states and gives advisory opinions. It issued the advisory opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s declaration.
Montenegro: A sovereign state in southeastern Europe that became independent from Serbia in 2006. Unlike Kosovo, Montenegro’s separation from Serbia was mutually agreed and widely recognized.
