Kresy

Kresy is the name for the eastern borderlands of the former Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, especially the eastern territories of interwar Poland. The term carries historical and cultural meanings shaped by shifting borders and mixed populations.

Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: A federated state of Poland and Lithuania that existed from 1569 until its partitions in 1795. Its eastern provinces formed the historical borderlands later associated with Kresy.
Poles: A West Slavic nation and ethnic group historically associated with Poland. Polish settlement, administration, and memory strongly shaped the idea of Kresy.
Soviet invasion of Poland: The Soviet Union’s invasion of eastern Poland on 17 September 1939, following the German invasion. Soviet occupation ended Polish control of the interwar eastern provinces.
