Kuroshio Current

The Kuroshio Current is a warm, fast western boundary current that flows northward along the western North Pacific, carrying tropical water toward Japan.

Western boundary current: A narrow, swift current along the western edge of an ocean basin, driven by wind and Earth’s rotation. The Kuroshio is the North Pacific’s western boundary current.
Kuroshio transport: The volume of seawater carried by the Kuroshio across a specified section per unit time. Its changing transport measures how much warm water the current moves northward.
Ocean current: A persistent, directed movement of seawater within an ocean or sea. The Kuroshio is one of the major currents in the global ocean circulation.
Gulf Stream: A strong western boundary current that flows northward along the western North Atlantic. It is the Atlantic counterpart often compared with the Kuroshio.
East Asian monsoon: Seasonal wind and rainfall patterns affecting East Asia, driven by land–sea heating contrasts and atmospheric circulation. Heat from the Kuroshio can influence air–sea exchanges near Japan.
North Pacific subtropical gyre: A large, clockwise circulation of surface water in the North Pacific, driven by prevailing winds. Its circulation concentrates water into the Kuroshio along the western boundary.
Kuroshio–Oyashio confluence: The ocean region east of Japan where the warm Kuroshio and cold Oyashio currents meet. The current’s interaction with the Oyashio helps create productive fishing grounds.
Bernhardus Varenius: A seventeenth-century German geographer whose work helped establish systematic physical geography. His geography helped circulate early European accounts of Pacific ocean currents.
North Equatorial Current: A westward-flowing tropical current spanning the North Pacific and North Atlantic. Its waters feed the Kuroshio near the Philippines and Taiwan.
Japan Sea: A marginal sea between Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and the Russian Far East. The Kuroshio’s warmth helps shape water properties entering this marginal sea.
