Taiwan Strait

The Taiwan Strait is the body of water separating Taiwan from mainland China, linking the East China Sea with the South China Sea.

Taiwan: An island in East Asia, separated from mainland China by the Taiwan Strait. The island forms the strait’s eastern boundary.
Taiwan Strait Land Bridge: A land connection between Taiwan and mainland Asia exposed during periods of lower sea level. It allowed migration across the area before rising seas submerged the connection.
Taiwan Strait shipping: Commercial and other maritime traffic moving through the waters between Taiwan and mainland China. The strait is a major route linking Northeast Asian ports with southern waters.
Luzon Strait: A strait between Taiwan and the Philippine island of Luzon, connecting the South China Sea with the Philippine Sea. It lies south of Taiwan and offers a separate route between regional seas.
Fujian: A coastal province of southeastern China facing Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait. Its coastline forms much of the strait’s western boundary.
Last Glacial Maximum: The period of maximum ice-sheet extent during the last glacial cycle, about 26,000 to 19,000 years ago. Lower sea levels then exposed much of the strait’s shallow seabed.
Taiwan Strait median line: An unofficial line across the Taiwan Strait that has served as a military buffer between the two sides. Aircraft and naval activity near the line shape security across the strait.
Korea Strait: A sea passage between the Korean Peninsula and Japan that connects the East China Sea with the Sea of Japan. It is another East Asian passage, but lies northeast of the Taiwan Strait.
East China Sea: A marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean bordered by China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. The Taiwan Strait opens northward into this sea.
Austronesian peoples: A broad group of peoples linked by languages originating in Taiwan and spread across the Indo-Pacific. Taiwan’s position across the strait is central to accounts of Austronesian origins and dispersal.
