Kyushu

Kyushu is the southwesternmost of Japan’s four main islands. Its volcanic landscapes, subtropical climate, and position near mainland Asia have shaped its history and regional culture.

Fukuoka: Fukuoka is Kyushu’s largest city and a major port and commercial center in northern Kyushu. The island’s largest urban center anchors its northern end.
Kyushu-Palau Ridge: The Kyushu-Palau Ridge is an underwater volcanic ridge extending south from Japan into the western Pacific. Its geological history is linked to the tectonic setting beneath southern Japan.
Yayoi period: The Yayoi period was an era of Japanese history marked by wet-rice farming, metalworking, and social change. Northern Kyushu was an early entry point for technologies and practices from the Asian mainland.
Geothermal energy: Geothermal energy is heat from within Earth used for heating or electricity generation. Kyushu’s volcanic activity provides substantial resources for geothermal development.
Honshu: Honshu is Japan’s largest and most populous island, containing Tokyo and many other major cities. Its greater size and population contrast with Kyushu’s southern, more maritime character.
Nagasaki: Nagasaki is a Japanese port city known for its early modern foreign trade and atomic bombing in 1945. Its history reflects Kyushu’s distinctive connections with overseas trade and wartime events.
Nankai Trough: The Nankai Trough is a subduction zone where the Philippine Sea Plate descends beneath southwestern Japan. Its plate boundary influences earthquakes and volcanic processes near Kyushu.
Dazaifu: Dazaifu was an administrative center in northern Kyushu that governed Japan’s relations with continental Asia. Its institutions made the island a frontier of diplomacy and defense.
Greenhouse horticulture: Greenhouse horticulture is crop production in protected structures that regulate growing conditions. Warm winters and regional agriculture support greenhouse cultivation across parts of Kyushu.
Shikoku: Shikoku is the smallest of Japan’s four main islands, southeast of Honshu. Both are southwestern islands, but Shikoku is smaller and separated from Kyushu by straits.
