Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal is a freshwater lake in southeastern Siberia, Russia. It is the world’s deepest lake and among its oldest, with exceptional endemic biodiversity.

Baikal Rift Zone: A tectonic rift system in southern Siberia where continental crust is pulling apart. Rifting created the deep basin that holds Lake Baikal.
Lake overturn: The seasonal mixing of lake water when temperature and density conditions allow layers to circulate. Water-column mixing renews oxygen in parts of Baikal’s deep water.
