Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake by area, lying across Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. It is the principal source of the White Nile.

African Great Lakes: A group of large lakes in and around the East African Rift system. Lake Victoria is the largest lake in this regional group.
Victoria Nile: The river carrying water north from Lake Victoria through Uganda toward Lake Kyoga. It begins at the lake’s outlet near Jinja.
Lake Victoria fisheries: Commercial and subsistence fishing carried out in Lake Victoria and along its shores. Fish provide food and livelihoods across the three lake-bordering countries.
Nile perch introduction to Lake Victoria: The deliberate introduction of Nile perch into Lake Victoria during the mid-twentieth century. The predator’s spread caused major changes in native fish populations.
Jinja: A Ugandan city near the northern shore of Lake Victoria and the source of the Victoria Nile. The lake’s outlet and major hydropower facilities lie beside the city.
Lake Victoria Basin: The drainage area whose rivers and rainfall feed Lake Victoria. Its watershed determines which land and rivers supply the lake.
Owen Falls Dam: A Ugandan hydroelectric dam at the outlet of Lake Victoria, now known as Nalubaale Dam. Its operation regulates water released from the lake into the Victoria Nile.
Nile perch: A large predatory freshwater fish native to parts of Africa, introduced to Lake Victoria in the twentieth century. Its fishery transformed exports and the lake’s food web.
Cichlids of Lake Victoria: A diverse assemblage of cichlid fishes, including many species endemic to Lake Victoria. Nile perch predation contributed to severe losses among these native fishes.
Ukerewe Island: An inhabited island in Tanzania’s Lake Victoria and one of Africa’s largest lake islands. It illustrates the scale of settlement and transport within the lake.
