Later Three Kingdoms

A period of Korean history, usually dated 892–936, when Silla, Later Baekje, and Taebong competed for control of the peninsula.

Gung Ye: A Silla aristocrat who founded Taebong and ruled it until his generals deposed him in 918. His fall let Wang Geon take power and rename Taebong Goryeo.
Unified Silla: The Korean kingdom that ruled most of the peninsula from 668 until its decline in the late ninth century. Its political fragmentation set the stage for renewed competition.
Goryeo dynasty: A Korean dynasty that ruled from 918 to 1392 and gave Korea its English name. Its foundation during the conflict became the beginning of the succeeding era.
Silla: An ancient Korean kingdom that ruled southeastern Korea and later unified much of the peninsula. The declining original kingdom faced two states claiming to revive older dynasties.
Wang Geon: The founder of Goryeo, who united most of the Korean Peninsula in 936. His alliances and campaigns turned Taebong into the leading unification contender.
Silla rebellions: Regional uprisings against Silla authority during its late period. Rebellions weakened central control and helped local military leaders build power.
Goryeo unification: The process by which Goryeo incorporated Silla and defeated Later Baekje, completing unification in 936. It was the conflict’s decisive political outcome.
Baekje: An ancient Korean kingdom that flourished in southwestern Korea until its defeat by Silla and Tang in 660. Later Baekje invoked this fallen kingdom’s name and legacy.
Gyeon Hwon: The founder and first ruler of Later Baekje, a major rival to Goryeo. His campaigns made Later Baekje Goryeo’s strongest military competitor.
Hubaekje: The Korean name for Later Baekje, the southwestern kingdom founded by Gyeon Hwon around 900. It revived Baekje’s name and territorial claims amid Silla’s decline.
