Leadership is the process of influencing and guiding people toward shared goals through direction, coordination, motivation, or example. It can arise from formal authority or informal relationships.

Goal setting: The process of defining desired outcomes and the standards used to assess them. Leaders turn shared aims into specific outcomes that can guide coordinated effort.
Followership: The active role people take in responding to, supporting, or challenging leadership. Leadership depends on how others interpret and respond to influence.
Autocratic leadership: A leadership style in which one person makes decisions with little input from others. It contrasts with shared decision-making by concentrating authority in the leader.
Leadership in education: The practice of guiding educational institutions and communities toward learning-related goals. School leaders align teaching, resources, and institutional priorities.
Emergent leadership: Leadership that develops through a group's interactions rather than being assigned formally. It raises how influence and recognized direction arise without an appointed role.
Decision-making: The process of selecting a course of action from available alternatives. Leadership often requires choosing priorities and committing a group to action.
Authority: The recognized right to make decisions, issue directions, or exercise power. Formal leadership may draw on authority, though influence can exist without it.
Democratic leadership: A leadership style that involves group members in decisions and deliberation. It distributes participation more widely than leader-directed approaches.
Political leadership: The exercise of influence and direction within political communities and institutions. Political leaders build support and guide collective decisions about public affairs.
Leadership effectiveness: The extent to which leadership helps achieve valued outcomes for groups or organizations. Its assessment depends on which outcomes count and over what period.
