Léon Damas

Léon Damas (1912–1978) was a French Guianese poet and politician who helped found Négritude and represented French Guiana in France’s National Assembly.

Négritude: A literary and political movement that affirmed Black identity and challenged French colonialism and assimilation. Damas helped establish this movement with Aimé Césaire and Léopold Sédar Senghor.
