Lepidodendron

Lepidodendron is an extinct genus of giant lycopsids that grew in Carboniferous coal-swamp forests. Its trunk bore a distinctive diamond-patterned surface left by persistent leaf bases.

Lycopsid: A vascular plant in the lineage that includes clubmosses, quillworts, and their extinct relatives. Lepidodendron belongs to this ancient plant lineage, not to the true trees of modern forests.
Lepidodendron leaf scar: A mark on a Lepidodendron trunk left where a leaf was attached. Scar shape and arrangement produced the genus’s characteristic trunk pattern.
Lepidodendron aculeatum: An extinct species of Lepidodendron known from distinctive trunk fossils. Its preserved bark illustrates the genus’s diagnostic leaf-scar pattern.
