LGBTQ rights are legal and political protections concerning equality, privacy, family, safety, and participation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people.

Obergefell v. Hodges: A 2015 United States Supreme Court decision recognizing same-sex couples’ constitutional right to marry. It established marriage equality as a constitutional protection in the United States.
Equal protection: A constitutional principle requiring government to treat people equally under the law. It supplies a basis for challenging laws that discriminate against LGBTQ people.
Stonewall uprising: A series of protests following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City in June 1969. The uprising became a catalyst and symbol for modern LGBTQ activism.
Sodomy law: A law criminalizing specified sexual acts, historically including consensual same-sex intimacy. Such laws directly opposed privacy and equality protections for LGBTQ people.
LGBTQ health disparities: Differences in health outcomes and access to care affecting LGBTQ populations compared with other populations. Discrimination and legal insecurity can contribute to unequal health outcomes.
Bostock v. Clayton County: A 2020 United States Supreme Court decision holding that Title VII bars employment discrimination against gay and transgender people. It extended a major federal workplace protection through statutory interpretation.
Anti-discrimination law: Law prohibiting unequal treatment based on specified characteristics in particular settings. These statutes translate equality principles into rules for employment, housing, and services.
Mattachine Society: A United States organization founded in 1950 to advocate for gay people’s rights and social acceptance. Its early organizing helped establish a durable movement for legal and social change.
Conversion therapy: Practices intended to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Bans on these practices frame protection from harm against claims of therapeutic choice.
Minority stress: Chronic stress arising from stigma, discrimination, and social disadvantage experienced by marginalized groups. It helps explain how unequal treatment can affect LGBTQ mental and physical health.
