Recognition

Recognition is the social process of acknowledging others as agents whose claims, identities, or participation deserve standing. It can shape both personal self-understanding and access to social or political rights.

Intersubjectivity: The condition of shared understanding and experience between people. Recognition takes shape between agents who encounter one another as subjects.
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel: A German philosopher whose work shaped idealism and theories of self-consciousness and social freedom. His account of self-consciousness made mutual recognition central to social relations.
