Lhasa

Lhasa is the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region in China, located in a high valley on the Tibetan Plateau. It is a historic center of Tibetan Buddhism and government.

Potala Palace: A monumental palace in Lhasa that served as the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and a seat of Tibetan government. Its hilltop silhouette dominates the city and embodies Lhasa’s former religious and political authority.

Tibetan Empire: A powerful Central Asian empire that flourished from the seventh to ninth centuries under Tibetan rulers. Its expansion made the Lhasa region a center of imperial power.

Lhasa Gonggar Airport: The international airport serving Lhasa, located in the Yarlung Tsangpo valley south of the city. Air connections make Lhasa accessible despite its remote plateau location.
Dalai Lama: The title of the spiritual leader of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, traditionally regarded as the reincarnation of Avalokiteshvara. The Dalai Lama’s historic residence and departure made Lhasa central to Tibetan political change.
