Li Hongzhang

Li Hongzhang was a Qing dynasty statesman and military leader who helped suppress the Taiping Rebellion and led late nineteenth-century diplomacy and modernization efforts.

Zeng Guofan: A Qing official and general who organized the Xiang Army and helped suppress the Taiping Rebellion. Zeng sponsored Li’s rise and helped bring him into high-level military service.
Treaty of Tianjin: A set of 1858 treaties that expanded foreign privileges in China after the Second Opium War. Li later negotiated settlements within the unequal treaty system these agreements helped establish.
Huai Army: A regional Qing force recruited largely in Anhui and organized under Li Hongzhang’s command. It was Li’s principal military base and a source of his political influence.
Taiping Rebellion: A vast civil war in southern and central China from 1850 to 1864, led by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Li’s military rise began with service against the rebellion and the growth of regional armies.
Kang Youwei: A Qing scholar and reform advocate who promoted sweeping institutional change, especially during the reform movement of 1898. His constitutional and institutional ambitions went beyond Li’s emphasis on practical military and industrial projects.
Cixi: The Qing empress dowager who exercised decisive political influence from the 1860s through 1908. Li served the court under her authority during the dynasty’s reform and diplomatic crises.
Convention of Peking: The 1860 agreement that ended the Second Opium War and confirmed major foreign concessions in China. Its settlement shaped the diplomatic order Li inherited and sought to manage.
Jiangnan Arsenal: A Shanghai military-industrial complex founded in 1865 to manufacture weapons and translate Western technical works. It exemplified the arms production and technical learning Li supported.
Nian Rebellion: A rebellion in northern China from the 1850s to 1868 involving mobile armed groups known as Nian. Li commanded campaigns against the Nian after the Taiping war, extending his military authority.
Sun Yat-sen: A Chinese revolutionary who helped overthrow the Qing dynasty and became the first provisional president of the Republic of China. His republican project rejected the dynastic framework Li sought to preserve.
