Liberian Civil Wars

Two armed conflicts in Liberia from 1989 to 2003 that killed hundreds of thousands and displaced much of the population, ending with a negotiated settlement and political transition.

National Patriotic Front of Liberia: A rebel movement led by Charles Taylor that launched Liberia’s first civil war in 1989. Its 1989 insurgency against Samuel Doe’s government began the first war.
William Tubman: Liberia’s president from 1944 to 1971, whose government promoted national unification while preserving Americo-Liberian dominance. The inequalities inherited from his era shaped later grievances against the ruling order.
Charles Taylor: A Liberian rebel leader who became president in 1997 and left office in 2003. He led the first major insurgency and his rule became a target in the second war.
Liberian refugee crisis: The mass displacement of Liberians during the civil wars, including flight to neighboring countries. Repeated offensives and insecurity drove many people from their homes and across borders.
Sierra Leone Civil War: An armed conflict in Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2002, marked by rebel atrocities and regional intervention. It overlapped with Liberia’s wars and was sustained in part by Taylor’s support for rebels.
Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia: A rebel faction led by Prince Johnson that split from the National Patriotic Front of Liberia. Its breakaway helped turn the campaign against Doe into a multi-sided fight.
William R. Tolbert Jr.: Liberia’s president from 1971 until his overthrow and death in a 1980 military coup. His overthrow opened the period of military rule that preceded the first civil war.
Prince Johnson: A Liberian rebel leader who broke with Charles Taylor and captured Samuel Doe in 1990. His faction’s role in Doe’s capture made him a central figure in the first war.
Special Court for Sierra Leone: A hybrid tribunal created to prosecute those bearing the greatest responsibility for crimes in Sierra Leone’s war. It tried Taylor for aiding crimes across the border, extending accountability beyond Liberia.
First Ivorian Civil War: A conflict in Côte d’Ivoire from 2002 to 2007 between government forces and northern rebels. It offers a regional comparison with Liberia’s transition from rebellion to peace agreements.
