Ligand field theory

Ligand field theory models bonding in transition-metal complexes by describing how surrounding ligands alter metal d-orbital energies and electronic structure.

Crystal field theory: An electrostatic model that explains transition-metal d-orbital splitting through interactions with ligand charges or dipoles. It captures electrostatic splitting but omits the covalent metal–ligand interactions included in ligand field theory.
Atomic orbital: A mathematical description of an electron’s allowed spatial distribution around an atom. Metal d orbitals are the starting states whose energies and shapes the theory tracks.
Electronic spectroscopy: The study of absorption or emission caused by transitions between electronic energy levels. Observed d–d transition energies can be compared with ligand-field splitting predictions.
Hans Bethe: A German-born theoretical physicist whose work included the quantum-mechanical treatment of crystal fields. His symmetry-based analysis helped establish the crystal-field framework that preceded ligand field theory.
Crystal field splitting: The energy separation between sets of metal d orbitals caused by their ligand environment. Its magnitude is the central energetic quantity used to predict electronic structure.
d orbital: An atomic orbital with angular momentum quantum number two, occurring in five spatial orientations. Ligand fields distinguish these five orbitals according to their orientation toward surrounding ligands.
Magnetochemistry: The study of chemical substances through their magnetic properties. Predicted unpaired-electron counts help explain the magnetic behavior of metal complexes.
John Hasbrouck van Vleck: An American physicist who developed quantum theories of magnetic susceptibility and chemical bonding. His work connected crystal-field ideas with the magnetic properties of transition-metal compounds.
Molecular orbital theory: A theory describing chemical bonding through molecular orbitals formed from combinations of atomic orbitals. Ligand field theory uses molecular-orbital ideas to account for covalent metal–ligand bonding.
Coordination complex: A species consisting of a central atom or ion bound to surrounding molecules or ions called ligands. Ligand field theory describes the electronic structure of these metal-centered assemblies.
