Line of Control

The Line of Control is the military control line separating Indian- and Pakistani-administered parts of Jammu and Kashmir. It is not an internationally recognized border and remains a frequent site of armed tension.

First Kashmir War: The 1947–1948 conflict between India and Pakistan over the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. The ceasefire ending this war established the line’s predecessor.
Ceasefire: An agreement or arrangement to suspend fighting between armed parties. Ceasefire arrangements shape how military forces are expected to behave along the line.
Jawaharlal Nehru: India’s first prime minister, who led the country during the opening years of the Kashmir dispute. His government took the Kashmir question to the United Nations during the first war.
Kashmir Valley: A Himalayan valley in the Kashmir region, largely administered by India. Its security and political life are affected by the nearby control line and wider conflict.
India–Pakistan border: The internationally recognized boundary separating India and Pakistan outside the disputed sectors of Jammu and Kashmir. Unlike this border, the Line of Control separates forces in a territory whose sovereignty remains disputed.
Karachi Agreement: A 1949 agreement between India and Pakistan that defined and demarcated a ceasefire line in Kashmir. It formally described the ceasefire line that later became the Line of Control.
United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan: A United Nations mission established in 1949 to observe ceasefire arrangements between India and Pakistan. Its observers monitor reported violations, though India disputes the mission’s continuing mandate.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto: A Pakistani political leader who negotiated the 1972 Simla Agreement with Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi. His negotiations helped establish the Line of Control’s post-1971 political framework.
Azad Kashmir: The Pakistani-administered territory officially called Azad Jammu and Kashmir, west of the Line of Control. Its eastern edge is defined in practice by the military line.
Actual Ground Position Line: The military line separating Indian and Pakistani positions on the Siachen Glacier. It is a separate, higher-altitude line north of the Line of Control.
