Longmen Grottoes

The Longmen Grottoes are a complex of Buddhist caves, inscriptions, and sculptures carved into limestone cliffs south of Luoyang, China, chiefly from the late fifth through tenth centuries.

Fengxian Temple: A monumental cave temple at Longmen containing a colossal seated Vairocana Buddha and attendant figures. Its mid-seventh-century sculptures form the site’s most celebrated imperial ensemble.
Northern Wei dynasty: A Xianbei-led dynasty that ruled northern China from 386 to 534. Its rulers established the early Longmen program after moving their capital to Luoyang.
Buddhist cave temple: A place of Buddhist worship and practice excavated or carved into rock. Longmen’s chambers adapt this broader architectural form to limestone cliffs.
Longmen Grottoes inscriptions: Thousands of texts carved at Longmen, including prayers, dedications, and records of donors. They preserve names, social ties, and dates unavailable from the sculptures alone.
Guyang Cave: A Longmen cave containing early Northern Wei Buddhist images and many dated donor inscriptions. Its sculptures and inscriptions document the grottoes’ formative Northern Wei phase.
Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei: A Northern Wei ruler who moved the dynasty’s capital to Luoyang and promoted cultural reforms. His relocation brought court patronage and Buddhist construction to the Longmen area.
Buddhist art: Visual art created for Buddhist worship, teaching, and devotional practice. Its iconography and conventions shape the grottoes’ sculptures and reliefs.
Chinese calligraphy: The art and practice of writing Chinese characters with brush or carved forms. Longmen inscriptions became a major reference for the study of stone-carved scripts.
Binyang Caves: Three Northern Wei cave temples at Longmen, begun under Emperor Xuanwu in the early sixth century. Their planned chambers show court-sponsored cave building before the Tang period.
Tang dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled from 618 to 907 and presided over a major era of cultural exchange. Tang patrons created many of Longmen’s largest and most refined sculptures.
