Yungang Grottoes

The Yungang Grottoes are Buddhist cave temples carved into sandstone cliffs near Datong, China. Created chiefly in the fifth and sixth centuries, they are renowned for monumental sculpture blending Indian, Central Asian, and Chinese styles.

Northern Wei dynasty: A dynasty that ruled northern China from 386 to 534 and sponsored major Buddhist institutions. Its rulers commissioned the earliest major phase of Yungang’s caves and sculptures.
Yungang Cave 20: A major Yungang cave containing a monumental seated Buddha exposed by the collapse of its front wall. Its open façade makes one of the complex’s signature sculptures visible from outside.
Emperor Wencheng of Northern Wei: A Northern Wei ruler who reigned from 452 to 465 and supported the restoration of Buddhism. His reign saw the court-backed campaign that began the major Yungang excavations.

Mogao Caves: A complex of Buddhist cave sanctuaries near Dunhuang, China, famous for murals and sculpture spanning many centuries. Mogao’s painted interiors and long chronology differ from Yungang’s concentrated early imperial carving.
