Lost Cause of the Confederacy

The Lost Cause of the Confederacy is a post–Civil War interpretation that romanticized the Confederacy, minimized slavery’s role in secession, and portrayed Southern defeat as noble and unjust.

Dunning School: A school of Reconstruction scholarship that portrayed white Southern rule as legitimate and Black political participation as corrupt. Its histories gave academic authority to Lost Cause portrayals of Reconstruction.
Reconstruction era: The period from 1865 to 1877 when the United States attempted to rebuild the South and define freedom after slavery. The Lost Cause emerged as former Confederates contested Reconstruction’s political and social changes.
Causes of the American Civil War: The political, economic, and social disputes that led the United States to civil war in 1861. The seceding states’ own declarations repeatedly identify slavery as a central cause.
Jim Crow laws: State and local laws that enforced racial segregation and Black subordination in the United States, especially from the late nineteenth century. Confederate memory helped legitimize white supremacy during the era of segregation.
Jefferson Davis: The president of the Confederate States of America from 1861 until its defeat in 1865. His postwar writings defended the Confederate cause and influenced its public memory.
United Daughters of the Confederacy: A women’s organization founded in 1894 that promoted Confederate memory, monuments, and textbook influence. The organization organized campaigns that carried Lost Cause narratives into schools and public spaces.
Alexander Stephens: The Confederacy’s vice president, whose 1861 Cornerstone Speech identified slavery and white supremacy as foundations of the new government. His speech directly contradicts later claims that slavery was incidental to Confederate nationhood.
Declaration of the Immediate Causes: Mississippi’s 1861 secession declaration, which states that its position is thoroughly identified with slavery. Its explicit language conflicts with claims that secession chiefly concerned abstract states’ rights.
Civil Rights Movement: A mass movement that challenged racial segregation and discrimination and sought equal rights for Black Americans. Civil rights activism contested the racial order and historical symbolism sustained by Lost Cause memory.
Jubal A. Early: A Confederate general who became a leading organizer and advocate of Confederate memory after the war. Early promoted accounts that celebrated Robert E. Lee and defended the Confederate cause.
