Louis the Pious

Louis the Pious was Charlemagne’s son and successor as emperor, ruling the Carolingian Empire from 814 to 840. His reign was marked by efforts to reform the empire and repeated conflicts over succession among his sons.

Ordinatio Imperii: An 817 decree that assigned imperial and royal roles to Louis’s sons while seeking to preserve the empire’s unity. Louis’s succession plan tried to subordinate his younger sons to Lothair.
