Louis VII of France

Louis VII ruled France from 1137 to 1180. His reign included the Second Crusade, his annulled marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine, and conflict with Henry II of England.

Eleanor of Aquitaine: Duchess of Aquitaine and queen consort of France and England, whose marriages linked her to two rival dynasties. Her marriage to Louis ended in annulment, changing the political map of western France.
Crown lands of France: Territories held directly by the French king, forming the material base of royal power. Louis ruled a kingdom larger than the lands he personally controlled.
Second Crusade: A crusading expedition launched in 1147 to defend the Crusader states after the fall of Edessa. Louis's participation made the expedition a defining episode of his rule.

Angevin Empire: The collection of territories ruled by Henry II and his successors across France and the British Isles. Its rise under Henry II made the French king's chief rival unusually powerful.
Suger: Abbot of Saint-Denis and royal adviser who served as regent during Louis VII's absence on crusade. He governed France while Louis was away and strengthened the royal administration.
Treaty of Gisors: A 1158 agreement between Louis VII and Henry II that arranged a betrothal between their children and addressed disputed lands. It shows Louis using marriage diplomacy to manage rivalry with Henry II.
