Lucid dreaming

Lucid dreaming is dreaming in which a person recognizes that they are dreaming. Some lucid dreamers can deliberately influence what happens in the dream.

Rapid eye movement sleep: A sleep stage marked by rapid eye movements, vivid dreaming, and temporary muscle paralysis. Most verified lucid dreams occur during this sleep stage.
Dream: A sequence of experiences, images, thoughts, and emotions occurring during sleep. Lucid dreaming is a distinctive form of dreaming.
Mnemonic induction of lucid dreams: A technique that uses intention and prospective memory to increase the chance of recognizing a dream. It is one of the best-known methods for intentionally inducing lucid dreams.
Frederik van Eeden: A Dutch physician and writer who introduced the term “lucid dream” in a 1913 paper. His paper gave the phenomenon its enduring name.
Dream consciousness: Conscious experience occurring during sleep, including awareness of imagery, thought, or emotion. Lucid dreaming is one form of conscious experience during sleep.

Celia Green: A British philosopher and researcher whose 1968 book analyzed lucid dreaming. Her work helped renew systematic interest in lucid dreams.
Neural correlates of consciousness: Brain processes that are consistently associated with conscious experience. Lucid dreams offer a rare chance to compare conscious and nonlucid states during sleep.
