Ludwig Boltzmann

Ludwig Boltzmann was an Austrian physicist who developed statistical mechanics and explained thermodynamic behavior through the probabilities of atomic and molecular motion.

Statistical mechanics: The framework connecting microscopic particle behavior with the macroscopic laws of thermodynamics. Boltzmann helped establish this field by deriving bulk behavior from molecular statistics.
Boltzmann equation: A kinetic equation describing how the distribution of particle velocities changes through streaming and collisions. This equation formalized Boltzmann’s description of gases moving toward equilibrium.
James Clerk Maxwell: A Scottish physicist whose work unified electricity and magnetism and advanced kinetic theory. Maxwell’s gas-velocity distribution preceded and strongly influenced Boltzmann’s statistical treatment.
James Clerk Maxwell's demon: A hypothetical being that sorts molecules by speed to challenge the second law of thermodynamics. The thought experiment raised questions about the statistical status of entropy that Boltzmann’s framework addresses.

Josiah Willard Gibbs: An American physicist who formulated statistical mechanics and introduced the ensemble method. Gibbs developed a complementary framework for statistical mechanics near the end of Boltzmann’s career.
Brownian motion: The irregular motion of microscopic particles suspended in a fluid, caused by molecular impacts. Its later quantitative analysis tested the molecular picture Boltzmann had argued for.
Arrow of time: The observed asymmetry distinguishing past from future in physical processes. Boltzmann connected its thermodynamic form to overwhelmingly probable changes in large systems.
