Luxor Temple

Luxor Temple is an ancient Egyptian temple complex on the Nile’s east bank, built chiefly during the New Kingdom and dedicated to Amun. It remained a place of worship through later Egyptian, Roman, and modern periods.

Pylon: A monumental gateway formed by two tapering towers flanking a central entrance in ancient Egyptian architecture. The temple’s entrance is marked by massive pylon gateways built under Ramesses II.
Amenhotep III: An Egyptian pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty whose reign brought extensive building and artistic production. He commissioned the original core of Luxor Temple in the fourteenth century BCE.
Roman temple of Luxor: A Roman military and cult precinct established within Luxor Temple during the Roman period. Roman builders converted part of the complex into a sanctuary associated with the imperial cult.
Luxor Obelisk: The obelisk from Luxor Temple presented to France and erected in Paris’s Place de la Concorde in 1836. Its removal made the temple’s paired obelisks an international diplomatic and cultural story.
Obelisk: A tall, four-sided stone shaft with a pyramidal tip, used as a monument in ancient Egypt. One of the two obelisks erected before the temple’s pylon remains in place.
Ramesses II: An Egyptian pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty known for military campaigns and extensive monuments. He added the temple’s great court, pylon, statues, and obelisks.
Abu Haggag Mosque: A mosque within Luxor Temple dedicated to the Sufi saint Abu al-Haggag. The mosque preserves the site’s continuing religious use within the ancient complex.
Place de la Concorde: A major public square in Paris, where the Luxor Obelisk was erected in 1836. The square became the obelisk’s new setting after France received it from Egypt.
Hypostyle hall: A large interior space whose roof is supported by rows of columns. The temple’s colonnade and halls use columns to structure movement toward its sanctuary.
Hatshepsut: An Eighteenth-Dynasty pharaoh who ruled Egypt as king and sponsored major construction projects. Her reign contributed early work to the temple complex begun before Amenhotep III’s additions.
