Madras Presidency

The Madras Presidency was a British Indian administrative province centered on Madras, encompassing much of southern India at its height. It was governed by the East India Company and later the British Crown.

Madras: A coastal city in southeastern India, now named Chennai, that served as the presidency’s capital. The presidency took its name from this city and was administered from it.
Governor of Madras: The chief executive who headed the Madras Presidency’s provincial government. The governor directed the presidency’s administration under Company and Crown rule.
Madras Presidency Association: A political organization founded in 1917 to press for non-Brahmin representation in the Madras Presidency. It organized opposition to Brahmin dominance in provincial politics.
Bombay Presidency: A British Indian province centered on Bombay, governing territories in western India. It was the western counterpart to Madras among the presidencies.
