Magadha

Magadha was an ancient kingdom in eastern India, centered in present-day Bihar. It became one of the subcontinent’s leading political powers during the first millennium BCE.

Bimbisara: Bimbisara was a king of Magadha, traditionally associated with the Haryanka dynasty and the reign of the Buddha. His marriage alliances and campaigns helped establish Magadha’s early strength.
Pataliputra: Pataliputra was an ancient city on the Ganges that became the capital of Magadha and later major empires. Its river connections and strategic position made it a powerful administrative center.
Mahajanapadas: The Mahajanapadas were sixteen major states and political communities described in early Buddhist and Jain texts. Magadha was one of these competing powers before it became predominant.
Mauryan Empire: The Mauryan Empire was an ancient South Asian empire founded by Chandragupta Maurya around 321 BCE. It grew from Magadha’s political base into the first empire to unite much of the subcontinent.
Ajatashatru: Ajatashatru was a king of Magadha who expanded its territory and fought the Vajji confederacy. His conquest of the Vajjis extended Magadha’s influence northward.
Ganges plain: The Ganges plain is a broad, fertile lowland across northern India drained by the Ganges and its tributaries. Control of its fertile land and waterways supported Magadha’s population and expansion.
Vajji: Vajji was a confederacy of clans in northern India, with Vaishali as a leading center. Its republican institutions and conflict with Magadha contrast with Magadha’s monarchy and expansion.
Chandragupta Maurya: Chandragupta Maurya founded the Mauryan Empire and ruled from about 321 to 297 BCE. His seizure of Magadha transformed the kingdom into an imperial center.
Haryanka dynasty: The Haryanka dynasty was an early ruling house of Magadha, associated with Bimbisara and Ajatashatru. Its rulers presided over Magadha’s first major period of expansion.
Iron Age India: Iron Age India is the period when iron tools and weapons spread across the subcontinent, beginning in the second millennium BCE. Ironworking aided agriculture and warfare during Magadha’s rise.
