Mahdist State

A Sudanese state established by Muhammad Ahmad’s followers after capturing Khartoum in 1885. It lasted until Anglo-Egyptian forces defeated it in 1898.

Muhammad Ahmad: A Sudanese religious leader who proclaimed himself the Mahdi in 1881 and led a revolt against Egyptian rule. His claim to Mahdist authority founded the state and shaped its legitimacy.
Mahdist War: The Sudanese revolt and ensuing conflict that culminated in the Mahdist conquest of Khartoum and later Anglo-Egyptian reconquest. The war created the state and ultimately brought about its defeat.
Osman Digna: A prominent Mahdist commander who led forces in eastern Sudan and the Red Sea region. His campaigns extended the state’s reach in the east and challenged British forces.
