Mahdist War

The Mahdist War was a conflict in Sudan from 1881 to 1899 in which followers of Muhammad Ahmad fought Egyptian and British forces, establishing a state that Britain and Egypt later conquered.

Siege of Khartoum: The 1884–1885 siege in which Mahdist forces captured Khartoum and killed its British governor, Charles Gordon. Its fall ended Egyptian rule in Sudan and became the war’s best-known victory.
Muhammad Ahmad: A Sudanese religious leader who declared himself the Mahdi in 1881 and led the uprising against Egyptian rule. His declaration and leadership launched the movement that became the war’s central force.
Abdallahi ibn Muhammad: The Mahdi’s successor, who ruled the Mahdist state as the Khalifa from 1885 until 1898. He maintained the state after Muhammad Ahmad’s death and led resistance to reconquest.
Mahdist State: The Islamic state established in Sudan by Muhammad Ahmad and ruled after his death by Abdallahi ibn Muhammad. It was the political order the uprising created and the reconquest destroyed.
Urabi revolt: An Egyptian nationalist and military revolt against foreign influence and the Khedival government in 1879–1882. It was a separate revolt in Egypt whose defeat helped Britain deepen its regional intervention.
Battle of Omdurman: The 1898 battle in which Anglo-Egyptian forces defeated the Mahdist army near Omdurman. The defeat broke the Mahdist state’s main field army.
Mahdism: An Islamic messianic movement centered on belief in the coming of the Mahdi, a divinely guided renewer of the faith. The movement’s religious claims gave the Sudanese uprising its name and organizing force.
Charles Gordon: A British general and administrator who governed Sudan and died during the fall of Khartoum in 1885. His defense of Khartoum turned the siege into a major British political crisis.
Anglo-Egyptian Sudan: The Sudanese territory jointly administered by Britain and Egypt from 1899 to 1956. Its establishment followed the defeat of the Mahdist state.
Egyptian Army: The armed forces of Egypt, which fought the Mahdist movement and later formed part of the reconquest force. Its early defeats contrast with its rebuilt role in the final campaigns.
