Mandala (Southeast Asian political model)

A Southeast Asian political arrangement in which authority radiates unevenly from a center and overlaps with neighboring centers. It lacked fixed borders and could shift as rulers’ power changed.

Tributary system: A political arrangement in which subordinate rulers acknowledge a stronger ruler through tribute while retaining local authority. Tribute expressed a ruler’s influence without requiring direct administration of distant territories.
O. W. Wolters: A historian of Southeast Asia known for developing influential interpretations of early regional history and political culture. Wolters popularized the mandala model in his account of early Southeast Asian political organization.
Angkor: The Khmer imperial capital and monumental complex in present-day Cambodia, flourishing especially from the ninth to fifteenth centuries. Angkor exemplifies a powerful court whose influence extended unevenly across surrounding regions.
