Manuel Godoy

Manuel Godoy (1767–1851) was a Spanish statesman who served as chief minister under King Charles IV and became a central figure in Spain’s alliance with Napoleonic France.

Charles IV of Spain: Charles IV ruled Spain from 1788 to 1808, during the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. Godoy’s career depended on Charles IV’s confidence and royal patronage.
Treaty of San Ildefonso (1796): The 1796 treaty allied Spain with revolutionary France against Great Britain. Godoy negotiated the alliance that brought Spain into war with Britain.
Mutiny of Aranjuez: The Mutiny of Aranjuez was a March 1808 uprising that forced Godoy from office and led Charles IV to abdicate. The revolt directly ended Godoy’s rule and exposed the royal family’s political weakness.

Ferdinand VII of Spain: Ferdinand VII ruled Spain in 1808 and again from 1814 to 1833. His supporters helped overthrow Godoy and secure Charles IV’s abdication.
