Readymade : An artwork made by selecting and presenting an existing manufactured object as art. Duchamp developed the readymade as a way to make artistic choice, rather than fabrication, central.
Émile Duchamp : A French notary and artist whose children included Marcel, Jacques Villon, and Raymond Duchamp-Villon. Duchamp grew up in a family where several siblings pursued ambitious artistic careers.
Henri-Pierre Roché : A French writer, art collector, and close friend of Marcel Duchamp. Roché belonged to Duchamp’s early Paris circle and preserved important personal records.
Conceptual art : Art in which the idea or procedure takes priority over the making of a traditional art object. Duchamp’s readymades became a major precedent for treating artistic decisions as the work’s core.
