Maritime republics

Maritime republics were independent Italian city-states whose naval power and Mediterranean commerce made them influential from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance.

Republic of Venice: An independent Venetian state that ruled a maritime empire and remained a major Mediterranean power for centuries. Its commercial networks and naval empire made it the most powerful maritime republic.
Mediterranean trade: The exchange of goods and services among societies bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Commercial routes supplied the wealth and connections behind the republics’ power.
Byzantine Empire: The eastern Roman Empire, centered on Constantinople, which survived until the Ottoman conquest of 1453. Byzantine grants and connections helped early Italian ports expand their commercial reach.
Venetian colonial empire: The network of territories and ports governed or controlled by Venice across the Adriatic and eastern Mediterranean. Overseas possessions secured routes and resources for Venetian commerce.
Kingdom of Sicily: A medieval and early modern kingdom centered on Sicily and southern Italy, ruled by monarchs. Its centralized monarchy contrasts with the autonomous, merchant-led governments of maritime republics.
Republic of Genoa: An independent Ligurian city-state whose merchants and fleets operated across the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Its rivalry with Venice shaped the competition between the leading maritime republics.
Galley: A vessel propelled chiefly by oars, often supplemented by sails, used for war and trade. Galleys carried cargo and enabled the naval campaigns that protected maritime commerce.
Holy Roman Empire: A Central European polity that claimed continuity with the Roman Empire and lasted until 1806. Imperial authority shaped the political conflicts through which northern Italian cities gained autonomy.
Genoese colonies: Genoese trading settlements and possessions established around the Mediterranean and Black Sea. These outposts connected Genoa’s merchants to distant markets and maritime resources.
Republic of Florence: A Tuscan republic whose wealth rested chiefly on banking, textiles, and continental commerce. Florence shows that Italian republican power could rest on finance and manufacturing rather than seafaring.
