Mass fraction

Mass fraction is the mass of a component divided by the total mass of a mixture or system. It is dimensionless and ranges from zero to one for a component in a mixture.

Mass: Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in a body or system. It supplies the numerator and denominator of a mass fraction.
Mass balance: Mass balance accounts for mass entering, leaving, and accumulating in a defined system. It ensures component masses and total mass are accounted for consistently.
Mass fraction in chemistry: Mass fraction in chemistry expresses the mass of a substance relative to the total mass of a sample or solution. It reports sample composition without depending on sample size.
Mole fraction: Mole fraction is a component’s amount of substance divided by the total amount of substance in a mixture. It weights components by particle amount rather than by mass.
Mixture: A mixture is a physical combination of substances that retain their chemical identities. A mixture’s total mass is commonly the denominator.
Weighted average: A weighted average combines values using weights that reflect their relative contributions. A mixture’s property can often be averaged using component mass fractions.
Mass fraction in alloys: Mass fraction in an alloy gives each constituent’s mass relative to the alloy’s total mass. Alloy recipes and specifications often state compositions by mass.
Volume fraction: Volume fraction is a component’s volume divided by the total volume of a mixture or system. It uses volume instead of mass, and volumes may not add ideally.
Component (chemistry): A component is a chemically distinct substance present in a mixture. Its mass is the quantity compared with the mixture’s total mass.
Conservation of mass: Conservation of mass states that mass remains constant in a closed system during physical or chemical change. It supports mass-fraction calculations when mixtures are transformed or combined.
