Matabeleland

Matabeleland is a region of southwestern Zimbabwe historically associated with the Ndebele people and their state. It includes the provinces of Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South.

Ndebele people: A Southern African people whose kingdom and descendants are centered in present-day Zimbabwe. Their settlement and political history gave Matabeleland its defining identity.
Lobengula: The second and last king of the Ndebele Kingdom, ruling from 1868 until its conquest in the 1890s. His reign and defeat mark the region’s transition from kingdom to colonial territory.
Bulawayo: Zimbabwe’s second-largest city and a major industrial and cultural center in the southwest. It is Matabeleland’s principal urban center and historic capital of the Ndebele kingdom.
Mashonaland: A region of northern Zimbabwe historically associated with Shona-speaking peoples. It is the principal historical and geographic counterpart to Matabeleland within Zimbabwe.
Mzilikazi: The founder and first king of the Ndebele kingdom, who led its migration north from the Transvaal. He established the kingdom that made Matabeleland a political center.
Ndebele language: A Nguni Bantu language spoken mainly in Zimbabwe, closely related to Zulu. It remains a major language of communities across Matabeleland.
Hwange National Park: Zimbabwe’s largest national park, known for its elephants and other savanna wildlife. It anchors conservation and tourism in Matabeleland North.
Zimbabwe: A landlocked country in southern Africa, bordered by South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and Mozambique. Matabeleland is a southwestern region within the modern state.
Ndebele Kingdom: A nineteenth-century Southern African state founded by Mzilikazi and ruled by the Ndebele. Its territory encompassed much of the region before British conquest.
Kalanga people: A Bantu-speaking people of southwestern Zimbabwe and neighboring areas of Botswana. Kalanga communities are part of the region’s history and present-day cultural landscape.
