Mayor of the palace

The mayor of the palace was a senior official in Frankish kingdoms who managed the royal household and, over time, exercised substantial political authority.

Merovingian dynasty: A Frankish royal dynasty that ruled much of Gaul from the fifth to the eighth century. Its kings appointed palace mayors, whose authority grew as Merovingian royal power weakened.
Pippin of Herstal: A Frankish aristocrat who became mayor of the palace in Austrasia and later controlled the Frankish kingdoms. His victories established lasting dominance for his family among the palace mayors.
