Medical specialty

A branch of medicine focused on a defined area of health, disease, diagnosis, or treatment. Specialties organize clinical expertise and training around particular patient needs or methods of care.

Medical education: Formal education and training that prepare people to practice medicine. Specialty expertise is built through medical school and further clinical training.
Cardiology: The medical specialty concerned with the heart and cardiovascular system. It illustrates specialties organized around an organ system and its diseases.
General practice: A form of primary medical care that addresses common health problems and refers patients when needed. Its broad remit differs from specialties centered on a narrower patient group or clinical domain.
Interdisciplinary team: A group of professionals from different disciplines who coordinate care toward shared goals. Complex conditions often require several specialties to contribute to one care plan.
Residency (medicine): Supervised postgraduate clinical training in a chosen medical field. Residency is the main stage where physicians develop specialty competence.
Pediatrics: The branch of medicine devoted to the health and care of infants, children, and adolescents. It defines its focus primarily by patients’ age and developmental needs.
Nursing specialty: A focused area of nursing practice requiring specialized knowledge and skills. Nursing specialties organize expertise separately from physician medical specialties.
Continuity of care: Coherent, connected care over time and across health professionals or settings. Specialty referrals can fragment care unless information and responsibility remain connected.
Medical board certification: A credential recognizing that a physician has met defined standards in a specialty. Certification provides a formal way to demonstrate specialty-specific knowledge and skill.
Psychiatry: The medical specialty concerned with diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental disorders. It combines medical training with focused care for mental health conditions.
