MI6, officially the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), is the United Kingdom’s foreign intelligence service. It gathers intelligence overseas to support national security and foreign policy.

Human intelligence: Intelligence collected through human sources rather than technical sensors or public material. Recruiting and handling people overseas is a central way SIS obtains secret information.
William Melville: A British intelligence official who led the Secret Service Bureau’s foreign section after its creation in 1909. Melville helped shape the organization that became SIS.
Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service: The head of the United Kingdom’s Secret Intelligence Service, appointed by the government. The chief leads SIS and represents it publicly; the post was long concealed behind the title “C.”

Operation Gold: A joint British-American operation that tunneled beneath East Berlin to tap Soviet communications in the 1950s. The operation illustrates SIS’s Cold War partnership with the CIA and the risks of compromised sources.
Covert operation: An operation designed to conceal the involvement of its sponsor or the nature of its activity. Some SIS activities are conducted secretly, though intelligence collection is broader than covert action.
First World War: A global war fought from 1914 to 1918, involving the United Kingdom and its allies against the Central Powers. Wartime intelligence needs expanded the foreign service’s work and institutional importance.
