Minamoto clan

The Minamoto were a Japanese warrior clan descended from imperial princes and one of the principal powers in the late Heian period. Their victory over the Taira in the Genpei War helped establish the Kamakura shogunate.

Minamoto no Yoritomo: The Minamoto leader who founded the Kamakura shogunate and became its first shogun. He turned the clan’s victory into a durable military government.
Genpei War: A conflict from 1180 to 1185 in which the Minamoto defeated the Taira. This war was the decisive contest behind the clan’s rise.
Seiwa Genji: A major Minamoto branch descended from Emperor Seiwa, including Yoritomo’s lineage. Yoritomo’s branch belonged to this prominent line within the wider clan.
Kamakura: A coastal city in eastern Japan that served as the seat of Yoritomo’s government. The clan’s political center lay far from the imperial court in Kyoto.
Minamoto no Yoshitsune: A Minamoto general renowned for victories in the Genpei War, later pursued by his brother Yoritomo. His battlefield successes helped secure the clan’s triumph over the Taira.
Battle of Dan-no-ura: A naval battle in 1185 where Minamoto forces destroyed the Taira fleet. The battle ended organized Taira resistance and secured Minamoto victory.
Genji: A Japanese clan name granted to descendants of imperial princes removed from the imperial line. The Minamoto were one of the principal houses bearing this imperial-derived name.
Bushi: Members of Japan’s warrior class, especially those serving military houses or lords. Minamoto leadership helped establish warriors as the country’s ruling force.
Taira no Kiyomori: A Taira leader who gained court power and fought the Minamoto in the Genpei War. His rise provoked the conflict that made the Minamoto the Taira’s decisive rivals.
Kamakura shogunate: Japan’s first shogunate, established by Minamoto no Yoritomo in the late twelfth century. It was the political institution the clan’s military ascendancy created.
