Monarchy

A system of government in which a monarch serves as head of state, usually through hereditary succession. Monarchies range from ceremonial constitutional roles to rulers with extensive political power.

Hereditary succession: The transfer of an office or title through family descent. It is the usual method for selecting a monarch and preserving dynastic continuity.
Chiefdom: A political community led by a chief whose authority often rests on kinship, status, and control of resources. It helps explain forms of hereditary leadership that preceded many states and monarchies.
Republic: A form of government in which the state is considered public and its head is not a hereditary monarch. It contrasts hereditary headship with public offices filled by nonhereditary means.
United Kingdom: A sovereign state comprising England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Its monarch is head of state while elected institutions exercise political government.
Legitimism: A political principle that regards hereditary or traditionally recognized rulers as the rightful sovereigns. It explains movements that sought to restore displaced dynasties.
Primogeniture: A rule that gives inheritance priority to the eldest child, traditionally the eldest son. It has often determined which child inherits a monarch's crown.
Sacred kingship: A political tradition in which a king's authority is connected to divine power or ritual roles. It shows how religious duties could reinforce a monarch's political standing.
Democracy: A system of government in which political power is held by the people, directly or through representatives. It raises the question of how popular sovereignty can coexist with a crown.
Saudi Arabia: A sovereign state on the Arabian Peninsula governed as a hereditary monarchy. Its king holds substantial executive authority within a contemporary monarchy.
Monarchism: Support for monarchy as a form of government or for restoring a particular monarchy. It turns attachment to kingship into an explicit political position.
