Mongol succession

Mongol succession was the process by which the ruling house selected and recognized khans. It combined dynastic eligibility, elite consent, and political negotiation.

Kurultai: A Mongol political assembly convened to deliberate on major matters, including the selection of a khan. Princes and leading nobles assembled to endorse or contest candidates for the throne.
Genghis Khan: The founder of the Mongol Empire, who united Mongol tribes and ruled from 1206 until 1227. His family arrangements and designation of an heir shaped the first imperial succession.
Primogeniture: A rule that gives the eldest child, usually the eldest son, priority in inheriting a title or estate. Mongol succession did not consistently follow an eldest-son rule.
Mongol civil war: The series of conflicts among Mongol princes and factions over imperial authority in the thirteenth century. Rival succession claims escalated into prolonged armed conflict.
Chinggisid: A member of the dynasty descended from Genghis Khan, whose lineage underpinned claims to Mongol rule. Eligibility to become great khan was closely tied to descent from Genghis Khan.
Jochi: The eldest son of Genghis Khan and founder of the Jochid branch of the Mongol ruling house. Questions about his parentage and inheritance affected how his descendants' claims were treated.
Appanage: A territory or revenue assignment granted to a member of a ruling dynasty for their support and authority. Princes' inherited territories gave rival branches resources and bases of power.
Kublai Khan: A grandson of Genghis Khan who ruled China as emperor and claimed the title of great khan. His victory over Ariq Böke secured his rule without winning lasting recognition from every Mongol branch.
Regency: The exercise of sovereign authority by someone governing on behalf of a ruler who cannot govern. Widow regents could govern between khans and influence which candidate gained support.
Ögedei Khan: The second great khan of the Mongol Empire, selected after Genghis Khan's death and ruling from 1229 to 1241. His selection established a precedent for choosing a successor at a kurultai.
