Monrovia (Liberia)

Monrovia is Liberia’s capital and largest city, on the Atlantic coast near the mouth of the Mesurado River. Founded in the nineteenth century, it is the country’s political and commercial center.

American Colonization Society: A U.S. organization founded in 1816 to promote the migration of free Black Americans to Africa. The society sponsored the settlement that established Monrovia.
Mesurado River: A short Liberian river that flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Monrovia. Its estuary shaped the city’s original settlement and harbor.
Executive Mansion (Liberia): The official residence and workplace of Liberia’s president in Monrovia. It is a central symbol and site of national executive power.
First Liberian Civil War: A Liberian conflict fought from 1989 to 1997 that devastated the country and displaced civilians. Fighting and displacement transformed the capital and brought large numbers of people into it.
Freetown: The capital and largest city of Sierra Leone, founded as a settlement for freed people. Its coastal location and settlement history resemble Monrovia’s, but arose under different colonial arrangements.
Liberia: A West African country founded by formerly enslaved and free Black settlers from the United States. Monrovia grew into the capital of the republic those settlers established.
Atlantic Ocean: The ocean between the Americas, Europe, and Africa. Monrovia’s Atlantic coastline connects the city to maritime trade routes.
Port of Monrovia: Liberia’s principal seaport, located on the Mesurado River estuary. The port makes the capital a major gateway for the country’s imports and exports.
Second Liberian Civil War: A Liberian conflict fought from 1999 to 2003, ending with the departure of President Charles Taylor. The war culminated in the 2003 siege and severe destruction of Monrovia.
Conakry: The capital and largest city of Guinea, located on the Kaloum Peninsula. Like Monrovia, it is a crowded Atlantic port capital in the Upper Guinea region.
