Morea

Morea was the medieval name for the Peloponnese, a peninsula in southern Greece. Its history included Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian, and Ottoman rule.

Fourth Crusade: A crusade redirected to Constantinople, which crusaders captured in 1204. Its conquest of Constantinople opened the way for Frankish rule in the Morea.
Despotate of the Morea: A Byzantine province in the Peloponnese, ruled by despots from the fourteenth century until the Ottoman conquest. It was the Byzantine political form that gave the Morea its late medieval government.
Manuel Kantakouzenos: A Byzantine prince who governed the Despotate of the Morea from 1349 to 1380. His long rule established the despotate as a durable regional court.
Mystras: A fortified Byzantine city in the Peloponnese that became the capital of the Despotate of the Morea. Its palaces, churches, and monasteries preserve the despotate’s political and cultural legacy.
Principality of Achaea: A Frankish crusader state established in the Peloponnese after the Fourth Crusade. It governed much of the Morea before Byzantine recovery reshaped the peninsula.
Byzantine Empire: The medieval continuation of the Roman Empire, centered on Constantinople and governed by Greek-speaking rulers. The Morea’s despotate was a regional government within this empire.
Theodore I Palaiologos: A Byzantine despot of the Morea who ruled from 1383 to 1407. His reign expanded Byzantine authority amid competition with local powers.
Church of Agia Sophia, Mystras: A Byzantine church in Mystras, built during the city’s period as a political center. Its architecture shows how imperial religious forms took root in the Morea.
Battle of Pelagonia: A 1259 battle in which the Nicaean Empire defeated an alliance including the Principality of Achaea. The defeat weakened Achaean power and helped Byzantium recover territory in the Morea.
Despot: A Byzantine imperial title often granted to close relatives of the emperor and regional rulers. The title identified the governors who exercised authority in the Morea.
